Australian Planting Calendar β€” What to Plant Now

Australia's seasons are reversed from the Northern Hemisphere, and our climate zones vary dramatically from tropical north to cool temperate south. This calendar is written for actual Australian conditions.

πŸ₯¬ Cool Season Crops (Mar–Jun)

Broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, peas, and broad beans β€” these cool-season crops thrive across southern Australia from autumn through winter. Plant garlic cloves in April for harvest the following summer. Ideal for raised beds and veggie patches from Perth to Hobart.

🌱 Spring Planting (Aug–Nov)

As soil temperatures rise above 15Β°C, the warm-season crops go in β€” tomatoes, zucchini, cucumber, capsicum, and beans. Start seeds indoors in July and transplant after the last frost date for your region. August is the traditional month to plant potatoes.

🌿 Year-Round (Tropical QLD/NT)

In Darwin, Cairns, and far-north Queensland, the wet/dry cycle replaces the four-season calendar. Most vegetables grow in the dry season (April to September). Tropical varieties of tomato, beans, and leafy greens thrive year-round with the right timing.

Astronomy Events 2026 β€” Southern Hemisphere Highlights

Australia sits at the perfect latitude to witness celestial events the Northern Hemisphere misses entirely. The Eta Aquariids, the Magellanic Clouds, and the galactic core of the Milky Way are all Southern Hemisphere exclusives.

πŸŒ‘ Total Lunar Eclipse β€” March 14

Visible from eastern Australia. The Moon turns copper-red for nearly an hour as it passes through Earth's shadow. No equipment needed β€” just clear skies and a comfortable chair. This is the most visually dramatic astronomical event of 2026.

β˜„οΈ Eta Aquariids β€” May 5–6

Australia's best meteor shower of the year. Up to 50 meteors per hour β€” far better than Northern Hemisphere viewers see. Debris from Halley's Comet burns up in our atmosphere at 66km/s, leaving long glowing trails across the sky. Best viewed after midnight from a dark location.

🌌 Milky Way Core Season (Apr–Sep)

The galactic centre rises high in the Australian winter sky. From a dark rural location more than 100km from a city, the Milky Way is bright enough to cast shadows. The two Magellanic Clouds β€” satellite galaxies of the Milky Way β€” are visible to the naked eye year-round from southern Australia.

Australian Fishing Seasons 2026

Moon phases, tidal movement, and water temperature are the three variables that predict fish behaviour. Planning your fishing trips around these factors β€” not just the calendar β€” consistently produces better results.

🐟 Snapper Season (Autumn)

March through May is peak snapper season in southern Australia. Port Phillip Bay, Spencer Gulf, and Cockburn Sound all produce exceptional fishing as water temperatures drop into the 14–18Β°C snapper sweet spot. Target reef structure on run-in tides around new and full moons.

🎣 Barramundi (Wet Season)

The iconic Australian fish, found from the Gulf of Carpentaria to the Kimberley. The October–February build-up and wet season brings barra into river systems and flooded plains. NT and far-north QLD offer the world's best barra fishing. Requires an offshore-capable boat or local charter.

🎣 Trout (Winter)

Lake and river trout fishing in Tasmania and the Victorian Alps is at its finest in winter. Fly fishing highland lakes on calm winter mornings β€” wild brown and rainbow trout in spectacular mountain settings β€” is one of Australia's great underrated outdoor experiences.

About the Australian Almanac

The word "almanac" comes from the Arabic al-manakh β€” a calendar of the heavens, the seasons, and the practical rhythms of life. For centuries, almanacs were the essential reference for farmers, sailors, and anyone whose livelihood depended on understanding natural cycles. We've built a modern version for Australians.

Australia's environment is genuinely unique. Our seasons run opposite to the majority of the world's online content. Our climate zones span the tropical, subtropical, Mediterranean, temperate, and cool-temperate. Our native flora and fauna are found nowhere else. A gardening guide written for the UK, a fishing guide written for the Gulf of Mexico, a bushwalking guide written for the Alps β€” none of them translate. This almanac does.

Each section is written specifically for Australian conditions:

πŸŒ™ What makes an almanac useful: It's not a one-time read β€” it's a reference you return to as the seasons change. Bookmark the relevant section for this month and come back each season for updated guidance.
